Democrat Slammed for Refusing to Stand for Trump’s Tribute to Murdered Children

In Washington’s latest flashpoint moment, Michigan Democrat Shri Thanedar is facing nationwide outrage after pointedly refusing to rise during President Trump’s address honoring families whose children were raped and murdered by illegal immigrants.

The silence from Thanedar and several Democrats has ignited a political firestorm, fueled not only by the moment itself but by what many on the right see as a troubling pattern of dismissing American victims while defending illegal immigrant offenders.

The confrontation exploded Friday night on Hannity, where the congressman was grilled over his decision.

“I did not stand because I was just sick of the president,” Thanedar said, doubling down on his refusal. “He was lying. He was using tragedy to score political points.”

During Trump’s historic 2025 joint-session speech, the president honored several young women murdered by illegal immigrants, including 12-year-old Houston girl Jocelyn Nungaray. Her mother, Alexis, sat in the gallery watching members of Congress’ reaction.

“It was shameful,” Alexis told Fox News earlier this year. “A lot of them wouldn’t clap, wouldn’t look at us. I found it very cowardly. They couldn’t stand up for innocent children, but they leap up for every political stunt under the sun.”

The Hannity Clash
Host Sean Hannity wasted no time confronting Thanedar over his silence.

“You wouldn’t stand for a 12-year-old girl who was raped and murdered,” Hannity said. “You were playing politics. You should be ashamed.”

Thanedar insisted he was protesting Trump, not the victims. “I would not stand for this president,” he repeated.

When pressed, he claimed some of his constituents are being “terrorized by ICE,” a remark that stunned many Republicans given Thanedar’s continued push to dismantle the agency entirely.

In 2025, Thanedar filed articles of impeachment against President Trump after the administration deported suspected gang member Kilmar Abrego Garcia. This year, he introduced legislation to abolish ICE altogether, calling the agency “beyond reform.”

The move came just days after left-wing activists blamed ICE for the death of Minneapolis woman Renee Nicole Good, who died during a confrontation with agents. Republicans say the push to villainize ICE agents reveals a disturbing double standard.

“You have Democrats rushing to defend a suspected gang member,” one senior GOP aide told us, “but they can’t rise to their feet for the mother of a murdered 12-year-old girl. That tells you everything.”
