Mountain Lion Sparks Fear in San Francisco (Video)

San Francisco residents were hit with an unexpected jolt Monday night after a young mountain lion was spotted wandering through one of the city’s wealthiest neighborhoods. Officials issued an urgent warning as the big cat moved through Pacific Heights, a dense residential area better known for Victorian homes and picturesque parks than prowling wildlife.

The alert came from the city’s Department of Emergency Management shortly before midnight. The animal was seen near Octavia Street and Pacific Avenue, only steps from Lafayette Park — a popular spot for dog walkers, families, and joggers.

Wildlife sightings are not unheard of on the edges of the Bay Area, but a mountain lion roaming deep inside downtown neighborhoods is rare. Experts say the city’s shrinking habitat zones and prolonged drought have pushed predators closer to heavily populated areas.

“It’s unusual, but it’s happening more often than people realize,” said Dr. Laura Beck, a wildlife biologist who tracks cougar movement across Northern California. “Young males will travel miles looking for territory. They get disoriented. They wander. And in a place like San Francisco, one wrong turn puts them in the middle of a neighborhood.”

Residents didn’t need the science to feel the tension.

One man walking his dogs told KGO he is steering clear of the park until the situation is under control. “We love wildlife, but this is different,” said Manuel Cases. “I have small dogs. I’m not taking any chances. We’re staying home until they find it.”

City officials reminded residents to stay calm if they encounter the animal. The rule is simple: do not run.

“Slowly back away,” the city warned. “Give the mountain lion space and notify Animal Care & Control immediately.”

Authorities are continuing to search for the big cat. As of Tuesday morning, no attacks or injuries had been reported — but the sighting has left many on edge.

“It’s a reminder,” Beck added. “We’re living next to wilderness, whether we see it every day or not.”
