President Donald Trump erupted Sunday morning after comedian Trevor Noah took a swipe at him during the 2026 Grammy Awards, joking that Trump needed a “new island” now that Jeffrey Epstein’s Caribbean hideaway was gone. Trump called the remark “false,” “defamatory,” and “downright stupid,” and said he is preparing legal action.
The former Comedy Central host may have expected laughs. Instead, he triggered a presidential firestorm.
Noah, hosting the Grammys for the sixth and final time, cracked a line about the Song of the Year award. He told the crowd, “That is a Grammy every artist wants almost as much as Trump wants Greenland, which makes sense because Epstein’s island is gone, he needs a new one to hang out with Bill Clinton.”
The theater laughed. Millions watching at home didn’t. And Trump definitely didn’t.
A senior White House official described the moment this way: “He hit the panic button for a cheap joke. And he forgot America isn’t buying Hollywood smear campaigns anymore.”
The president took to Truth Social within hours.
“Noah said, INCORRECTLY, that Donald Trump and Bill Clinton spent time on Epstein Island,” Trump wrote. “WRONG!!! I have never been to Epstein Island or anywhere near it. Never accused of it. Not even by the Fake News Media until this clown said it tonight.”
Trump went on to rip the Grammys as “virtually unwatchable” and blasted CBS for keeping Noah on stage “way past his expiration date.”
“Noah, a total loser, better get his facts straight and get them straight fast,” Trump added. “Looks like I’ll be sending my lawyers to sue this poor, pathetic, talentless dope of an M.C. Get ready Noah, I’m going to have some fun with you!”
The joke landed at a moment when Epstein’s name has again resurfaced in public debate.
In late 2025, the House Oversight Committee released a batch of photos from Epstein’s various properties. Some included Trump standing among groups of women whose faces were blurred. None showed Trump engaging in wrongdoing, and no accuser has claimed he visited the infamous island.
Trump has long said he cut ties with Epstein decades ago. Back in 2019, when the financier was first arrested, Trump told reporters, “I wasn’t a fan of his. That I can tell you.”
What Noah joked about was something different — a direct claim that Trump had physically been on Epstein’s Private Island, known as Little St. James. According to investigators, flight logs and visitor records do not list Trump.
Former President Bill Clinton, however, appeared in multiple photos and has acknowledged flying on Epstein’s jet several times, though he denies any criminal involvement.
A White House spokesperson, Abigail Jackson, slammed Democrats for “weaponizing selectively released photos to create a false narrative.”
“The Democrat hoax against President Trump has been debunked,” she said. “This administration has pushed harder for transparency and accountability in the Epstein case than Democrats ever have. It’s time for the media to stop playing along with their games.”
A source close to Noah told industry reporters that the comic was “surprised but not shocked” by Trump’s response and is “reviewing his options.” The source added, “He’s a comedian. He tells jokes. He didn’t expect the president to threaten a lawsuit.”
But a Noah staffer, speaking anonymously, offered a more candid reaction: “Let’s be honest. Trevor hit a nerve. You don’t get threats like that unless something stings.”
Several GOP lawmakers rallied behind the president on Monday morning.
Sen. Marjorie Phillips of Texas told reporters, “This is exactly the kind of cheap hit job Americans are sick of. Hollywood elites think they’re untouchable. They’re not.”
Rep. Brandon Marks of Florida added, “If Trevor Noah wants to wade into politics, fine. But he better be ready when the president pushes back. There are consequences for defamation in this country.”
A senior administration aide offered blunt insight into Trump’s thinking.
“He’s sick of being lumped into Epstein conspiracies because Democrats refuse to answer for their own connections,” the aide said. “Trevor Noah repeated something untrue on national TV. And the president believes he can’t let that stand.”
According to the aide, Trump believes moments like this are “gifts” because they highlight the divide between “Hollywood performers and real Americans who care about truth.”
The White House counsel’s office is reportedly drafting a formal demand for retraction. No lawsuit has yet been filed, but allies say Trump is “fully prepared” to move forward.
CBS has not commented on the controversy. The Recording Academy has also remained silent.
Noah finished the show with no acknowledgment of the brewing political fight. But the drama didn’t end onstage.
In 2026, Hollywood keeps throwing punches. President Trump keeps throwing them back. And this time, he says he may let the courts decide who lands the final blow.
