Dr. Anthony Fauci may have escaped immediate legal consequences during the Biden years, but the walls could finally be closing in as explosive new testimony and criminal indictments reignite questions about what America’s top pandemic doctor knew — and when he knew it.
Fresh outrage erupted after former Fauci adviser David Morens was indicted on federal charges tied to an alleged scheme to hide records connected to controversial gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology — the same Chinese lab many experts now believe may have sparked the COVID-19 pandemic.
The indictment has conservatives and COVID skeptics demanding accountability from Fauci himself, especially after years of accusations that he worked behind the scenes to bury the lab-leak theory while publicly dismissing it as a conspiracy.
Even though former President Joe Biden reportedly issued Fauci a sweeping preemptive pardon before leaving office, critics say that may not be enough to shield the longtime government scientist forever.
President Donald Trump has blasted Biden’s alleged autopen pardon as “invalid,” fueling speculation Fauci could still face legal jeopardy over past congressional testimony and claims he made under oath.
And now Sen. Rand Paul — one of Fauci’s fiercest critics during the pandemic — is reportedly preparing for another major showdown.
Paul, who has repeatedly accused Fauci of misleading Congress about U.S. funding connected to Wuhan research, is said to be building a fresh case to subpoena the former NIH official for more testimony under oath.
That could become a major problem for Fauci if investigators determine any statements made after January 2025 contradict earlier claims.
But the biggest shock may have come from recent testimony by CIA whistleblower James Erdman, who alleged there was a coordinated effort inside the intelligence community to downplay evidence supporting the lab-leak theory.
According to Erdman, Fauci personally inserted himself into discussions involving the CIA and other agencies during key moments in 2020 and 2021 as officials debated the true origin of the virus.
The whistleblower claimed analysts leaning toward the lab-leak explanation were pressured to shift away from that conclusion and instead support the “natural origins” narrative pushed publicly during the height of the pandemic.
Erdman also alleged Fauci helped direct officials toward a carefully selected group of scientists tied to the infamous 2020 paper “The Proximal Origin of SARS-CoV-2,” which was widely used to dismiss claims the virus escaped from a lab.
For years, conservatives argued the lab-leak theory was unfairly branded as “misinformation” simply because Trump and his allies supported it.
Back in 2020, Trump was mocked across major media outlets after suggesting COVID may have originated in Wuhan’s virology lab. Critics labeled the claim racist, conspiratorial and anti-science.
But over time, even several federal agencies acknowledged the lab-leak explanation could not be ruled out — and in some cases appeared increasingly plausible.
Scientists questioning the official narrative have long pointed to the virus’s unusual characteristics and its immediate ability to spread efficiently among humans as reasons for concern.
Meanwhile, critics say Fauci’s own emails showed he was warned early in the pandemic that some researchers suspected the virus may have been engineered or manipulated in a lab setting.
Despite the growing controversy, Fauci has remained a celebrated figure in many elite academic and medical circles.
The 85-year-old former White House adviser continues to give speeches, promote his memoir and receive awards, even as millions of Americans remain furious over lockdowns, vaccine mandates and shifting pandemic guidance that defined daily life for years.
To conservatives, the latest revelations only reinforce what they’ve believed all along: that powerful officials, media outlets and government agencies worked overtime to protect Fauci while silencing dissenting voices.
Now, with new testimony, renewed investigations and growing pressure from Republicans, Fauci’s role in one of the biggest global disasters in modern history is once again under the microscope — and this time, critics say, the questions may be harder to avoid.

I keep getting angry at the way Fauci has been treated. He is a physician, not a politician. He makes medical decisions. The ones he has made have been spot on. They have angered some because they were not popular, politically. Let him keep making his good medical decisions and stop complaining because they may not be politically feasable. He deserves awards and praise for his courage.Dr. Larry Schlatter
