What was supposed to be a celebration of achievement turned into a political firestorm at a North Carolina high school graduation when the class valedictorian abandoned her approved speech and launched into a controversial rant about Israel, immigration enforcement, and global conflicts before being removed from the podium.
The dramatic moment unfolded during Clayton High School’s commencement ceremony on May 28, when senior Leen Hijaz took the stage to deliver her valedictorian address. But instead of sticking to the speech school officials had approved beforehand, she veered into a passionate political message that quickly stunned students, parents, and faculty in attendance.
“Before I leave the stage, I have one last thing to say,” Hijaz told the crowd. “Every single person here has a voice; we have the privilege to use it when millions around the world are struggling and suffering to be heard.”
She then referenced conflicts and humanitarian crises in several countries, including Palestine, Sudan, Congo, and Afghanistan, before criticizing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
“Whether it’s the millions suffering in Palestine, Sudan, Congo, Afghanistan and so many other countries around the world, or families being torn apart by ICE,” she said. “These are not just an issue there; they’re happening right here as I speak.”
As the speech continued, school administrators moved in.
Video from the ceremony shows Principal Melissa Moore walking onto the stage and cutting off the speech before escorting Hijaz away from the microphone. The crowd reacted with a mixture of cheers, applause, and visible surprise as the unexpected confrontation unfolded in front of hundreds of attendees.
“My point is, we’re not given a voice to stay silent,” Hijaz shouted moments before being stopped.
After leaving the podium, the valedictorian returned to her seat, where video appears to show her smiling and waving to members of the audience.
The incident quickly exploded online, with clips spreading across social media and sparking fierce debate. Supporters praised Hijaz for speaking out on issues she believes are important, while critics argued that graduation ceremonies should remain focused on students’ accomplishments rather than political activism.
The controversy intensified after Hijaz posted videos on TikTok claiming school officials initially withheld her diploma following the speech. She said the situation made her feel “oppressed” and accused administrators of punishing her for expressing her views.
However, Johnston County Public Schools later clarified that her diploma was ultimately awarded.
In a statement, district officials said the issue was not about silencing political opinions but about maintaining the purpose of the ceremony.
“During this year’s Clayton High School graduation, a student departed from her approved remarks,” the district said.
“School administrators intervened in order to maintain the integrity and focus of the program in real time. This action was not about limiting a student’s voice, but about ensuring that a school-sponsored event remained consistent with its intended purpose.”
The incident has become the latest flashpoint in the ongoing national debate over politics in schools, free speech, and whether major school events should be used as platforms for activism.
For many parents and graduates who attended the ceremony expecting a traditional celebration, the graduation will likely be remembered less for diplomas and more for the political showdown that unfolded on stage.
