A heartbreaking murder case that already divided the country has now taken an even uglier turn.
Internet trolls are being accused of doctoring photos to make it look as though they are urinating on the grave of Austin Metcalf, the 17-year-old Texas student who was stabbed to death at a high school track meet in 2025.
The sickening images began spreading across social media this week after 19-year-old Karmelo Anthony was convicted Tuesday of first-degree murder in Metcalf’s killing. Some of the posts included hashtags such as “#FreeKarmeloAnthony,” “#AustinMetcalf,” and other crude attacks aimed at the slain teenager.
One post reportedly read, “I felt a lil Pissy Today … FREE KARMELO … HELLO.”
Another said, “I woke up and chose violence !! FREE #KarmeloAnthony.”
A third post included an obscene message directed at Metcalf, along with laughing and middle-finger emojis.
The images appeared to show people standing beside Metcalf’s grave, which includes photos of the teen and the words “Beloved son, brother and warrior.” A fake stream of yellow urine was edited into the pictures to make it look like they were desecrating his tombstone.
The posts quickly sparked outrage online, with many calling them a disgusting attack on a grieving family that has already endured the unimaginable.
The controversy exploded after the conservative Libs of TikTok account highlighted the images on X and claimed the people involved were BLM activists. However, according to the report, there was no clear evidence from the individuals’ accounts that they were officially connected to the Black Lives Matter organization.
Still, the vile posts appeared to be tied to a wider online movement defending Anthony and claiming his prosecution was racially motivated because Anthony is Black and Metcalf was white.
The case has become a flashpoint in America’s ongoing battle over crime, race, justice, and political activism. For many conservatives, the disturbing grave images are another example of how radical online agitators can turn even the murder of a teenager into a political spectacle.
Metcalf was killed in April 2025 after a confrontation with Anthony at a Texas track meet. According to the case, Anthony had been sitting in a tent belonging to Metcalf’s team when Metcalf told him he needed to leave.
Anthony repeatedly refused. At one point, he allegedly told Metcalf, “Touch me and find out.”
Metcalf then pushed Anthony, who pulled a knife from his bag and stabbed him in the chest. The wound proved fatal.
Anthony was arrested shortly after the stabbing and claimed he acted in self-defense. His supporters argued that prosecutors were unfairly targeting him and claimed the case was driven by racism.
The racial makeup of the jury also became a major issue among Anthony’s supporters. The jury included white, Asian, and Hispanic jurors, but no Black jurors.
The trial drew large crowds to the Texas courthouse, where emotions boiled over and arguments erupted between opposing groups.
Despite the heated public debate, Anthony was found guilty of first-degree murder. He was sentenced to 35 years in prison, a harsher outcome than he would have faced if convicted of a lesser charge such as second-degree murder or manslaughter.
Anthony has already filed notice that he intends to appeal the conviction.
Meanwhile, the Metcalf family is now being forced to endure a new wave of cruelty online.
What began as a tragic killing between two teenagers has turned into something far darker: a national symbol of how quickly grief, crime, and politics can collide in the social media age.
And for many Americans watching this story unfold, the alleged grave-mocking posts were not activism. They were simply evil.
