A convicted parolee who had only been out of prison for a few months is now accused of setting a deadly blaze at a New York motel being used to house homeless residents, leaving six people dead and a community reeling.
Tyler Russell, 24, was arrested after authorities say he sparked a massive fire early Monday morning at the Knights Inn in Endwell, a hamlet in upstate New York. The motel, located on East Main Street, had reportedly been used by the Broome County Department of Social Services as temporary housing for homeless individuals.
Now, six people are dead, families have been displaced, and a parolee with a criminal past is back behind bars.
According to New York State Police, emergency crews rushed to the motel around 6 a.m. after reports of a raging fire. When firefighters arrived, they were met with thick black smoke and flames tearing through the building.
The scene quickly turned into a nightmare.
Authorities said six people, whose names have not yet been released, were pronounced dead. Several others who had been staying at the motel were forced out by the blaze.
Russell has been charged with six counts of manslaughter and one count of arson in connection with the deadly inferno. He was booked into the Broome County Jail and was awaiting arraignment.
The case is already raising serious questions about public safety, parole decisions, and the use of motels to house vulnerable people.
According to prison records cited by Syracuse.com, Russell previously spent two years in state prison on grand larceny charges. He was released on parole in February, just months before the deadly fire. It remains unclear whether Russell had been living at the Knights Inn at the time of the blaze.
The Knights Inn was reportedly one of several area hotels used by local officials to place homeless residents. After the fire, the Red Cross stepped in to help displaced families and survivors.
The United Way of Broome County also launched an emergency relief fund for victims of the fire, which has already raised more than $41,000 in donations.
Photos from the scene showed firefighters battling a massive wall of flames as smoke poured from the motel. For residents and first responders, the early-morning blaze marked one of the most horrific tragedies the community has seen in years.
Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing.
