Kamala Harris is once again being roasted for a rambling public appearance after critics accused the former vice president of delivering another “word salad” speech — this time inside a WNBA locker room.
The former Democratic presidential nominee visited the Los Angeles Sparks over the weekend before their home game against the Chicago Sky, where she attempted to fire up the team with a pep talk about inspiration, dignity, and the impact the players are having on fans across the country.
But while the Sparks appeared to welcome the visit, Harris’ critics quickly pounced online, mocking her remarks as confusing, over-the-top, and painfully familiar.
Harris addressed the players in the locker room in a clip shared by the Sparks on X, praising the team for what she described as its influence far beyond the basketball court.
“I travel our country, young girls, boys, people of every gender, background, race, watch the W, and understand how inspiring it is,” Harris told the team. “So keep doing what you’re doing.”
She continued: “You guys are impacting people who you will never meet, people who may never know your name or mine, but they are aware of what you are doing. And it is giving them a sense of their value and their dignity and what they have a right to expect from this world.”
Harris then congratulated the players not only on the game, but on what she called “the path” they were charting.
“It is extraordinary to watch,” she added.
The former vice president wrapped up the visit by leading the players in a chant of “Together,” but the feel-good moment did not land with everyone.
Conservative sports commentator Clay Travis blasted the speech on X, writing: “Kamala Harris gave a locker room speech to a WNBA team that made zero sense and then led a together cheer with them.”
Others joined in, with one critic joking: “Kamala keeps reappearing like a bad movie sequel.”
Another slammed the remarks as “word salad,” while one user wrote: “I have no idea what she was trying to say! I think it probably had something to do with giving girls dreams, but she needs a social media and PR director in a bad way.”
One especially harsh critic added: “Even she doesn’t know where she’s going to wander with the words coming out of her mouth. The end result is a surprise to everyone.”
The backlash is nothing new for Harris, who has long been mocked by Republicans and even some frustrated Democrats for speeches that critics say often sound polished at first but quickly wander into vague, repetitive talking points.
Her WNBA appearance also comes as speculation continues to swirl about whether she will try to make another run for the White House in 2028 after her bruising 2024 loss to Donald Trump.
Harris has not ruled it out.
“Listen, I might. I might. I’m thinking about it,” Harris told Rev. Al Sharpton in April. “I know what the job is and what it requires…I’ll keep you posted.”
But the possibility of another Harris campaign is already causing anxiety inside Democratic circles, where some party insiders fear she may not be the fresh face voters are looking for after the party’s 2024 defeat.
Former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown, who has known Harris for decades, suggested Democrats may want to look elsewhere if they are serious about winning.
“When you embrace somebody for the job, you really want to embrace a winner,” Brown said, pointing to California Gov. Gavin Newsom as someone who currently has that reputation.
Brown also noted Harris was “the most recent loser” of the presidential race.
One California donor and early Harris supporter, who spoke anonymously, was even more blunt.
“I have not heard one person suggest it would be good for anything if she ran,” the donor said. “We are looking for someone who is fresh and not imposed on the voters. We understood we were stuck with the situation last time, but this is not the case going forward.”
A fundraiser who helped raise money for Harris’ 2024 campaign agreed, saying voters are likely to want “a new, fresh, younger voice with a different perspective” who can clearly lay out a vision for the future.
“I don’t believe that Kamala is the right person for this moment by any stretch of your imagination,” the fundraiser said.
For now, Harris appears to be staying visible, hitting public events and keeping her political options open. But if the reaction to her Sparks locker room speech is any sign, Republicans are more than ready to turn every rambling moment into fresh campaign ammunition.
