Democrats Hit by Brutal Summer of Arrests and Bizarre Scandals

July delivered a punishing string of headlines for several prominent figures connected to Democratic politics, with scandals ranging from a fatal shooting at a congresswoman’s family-owned property to an alleged child-luring incident, a methamphetamine arrest and a widely ridiculed social media stunt.

The controversies have given Republicans fresh ammunition to hammer Democrats over judgment, accountability and the behavior of figures within the party’s political orbit.

One of the most disturbing cases involves Massachusetts Rep. Ayanna Pressley, a progressive member of the so-called “Squad.”

On July 18, 18-year-old Yoseliani Marte was found dead from a gunshot wound inside a $1.15 million Boston property owned by Pressley’s husband, Conan Harris, 49.

Investigators said Marte suffered a single gunshot wound and was discovered inside a second-floor bedroom of the Mattapan rental home.

Authorities have not accused either Pressley or Harris of wrongdoing in connection with the teenager’s death.

Pressley and Harris issued separate statements offering condolences to Marte’s family. A spokesperson for the congresswoman also emphasized that Pressley herself is not the landlord of the property.

But the grisly discovery nevertheless dragged another high-profile progressive lawmaker into an uncomfortable national spotlight.

Another politically connected family faced an entirely different controversy in Hawaii.

Betarti Gabbard, 55, the brother of former Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, was arrested July 17 after allegedly trying to lure several children into his Waikiki hotel room using gum and money five days earlier.

Police charged Gabbard with second-degree custodial interference after a parent reportedly alerted authorities.

His family later said he was receiving medical and psychiatric treatment.

“We love him and asked him to follow the protocol at the hospital, which he says he will do,” his father, Hawaii Democratic state Sen. Mike Gabbard, said.

Then came another ugly headline involving former Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, once viewed as one of the Democratic Party’s most promising rising stars.

Gillum, 47, who narrowly lost the 2018 Florida governor’s race as the Democratic nominee, was arrested in Alabama on July 2 after police said they pulled him over for allegedly driving erratically on Highway 98 near Mobile.

Authorities charged Gillum with felony possession of a controlled substance along with misdemeanor marijuana and drug-paraphernalia offenses.

Police allegedly discovered methamphetamine, marijuana and a glass pipe inside his vehicle.

Gillum was released on bail the following day, pleaded not guilty and entered a drug treatment program.

The arrest marked another stunning setback for a politician whose career had already been badly damaged by a notorious 2020 incident in Miami Beach.

Gillum was found “inebriated” inside a hotel room during that episode alongside a male escort, an incident that triggered intense scrutiny of his personal life and political future.

A hearing scheduled for Aug. 4 was expected to help determine whether Gillum’s latest felony case would move toward trial or potentially be handled through a court-supervised treatment program.

And while the other cases involved police investigations and criminal charges, Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar managed to generate controversy of a very different kind.

The “Squad” member jumped onto a viral TikTok trend by posting a video pretending to prepare for a future Netflix documentary about Minnesota supposedly defeating what she described as ICE’s “racist terror campaign.”

“Me preparing for the documentary on how we defeated ICE’s racist terror campaign in Minnesota,” text on the video declared.

The stunt was quickly mocked by critics across social media, with some branding the performance “cringe.”

Taken individually, the incidents have little to do with one another, and several involve relatives rather than Democratic officeholders themselves.

Taken together, however, they produced an extraordinary run of damaging headlines surrounding Democratic political circles — exactly the kind of summer Republicans are unlikely to let voters forget anytime soon.
