Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey is getting roasted online after unleashing a painfully awkward dance routine at the Black Entrepreneur State Fair — and social media users wasted little time turning the Democrat’s moves into a punchline.
Frey, 45, was captured on video attempting to dance during a rap performance at the Minneapolis event over the weekend, enthusiastically swinging his arms and shifting his hips while a hip-hop beat blasted in the background.
There was just one problem: critics thought the mayor’s rhythm was nowhere to be found.
Dressed in an off-white button-down shirt, gray khakis and dark sunglasses, Frey tried to keep pace with the much more animated emcee beside him as the performance unfolded in what appeared to be a sparsely attended parking lot.
The clip quickly spread online, where viewers piled on with brutal reactions.
“This cannot be real life. This is just so sad on an epic scale,” one X user wrote.
Another joked, “We’re ruled by theater kids. How did we let this happen?”
“Is he made of wood?” another commenter asked, apparently stunned by the mayor’s stiff movements.
One particularly unforgiving viewer summed it up this way: “That dance was stiff as a board. Zero rhythm, all effort. Brutal for real.”
For Frey, the ridicule may feel painfully familiar.
The progressive Minneapolis mayor has repeatedly found himself going viral for his enthusiastic — if not exactly graceful — attempts to dance at public events.
During a Somali Independence Day celebration in Minneapolis last summer, Frey took the stage holding a Somali flag and began dancing in front of the crowd. Video of the moment quickly circulated online, with critics mocking his exaggerated arm movements.
Then came his 2025 reelection campaign.
Frey once again showed off his moves while taking the stage at a campaign event, producing another clip that critics eagerly seized on.
Now, his latest performance has given detractors fresh ammunition.
While politicians routinely try to loosen up at festivals, rallies and community events, Frey’s latest attempt at connecting with the crowd instead became another viral reminder that some elected officials may be better off leaving the dancing to the professionals.
