President-elect Donald Trump has declared Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ready to pursue peace amid the ongoing conflict with Russia. During a weekend visit to Paris for the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral, Trump shared details of his meetings with global leaders and reflected on his encounters, including a conversation with First Lady Jill Biden.
“He wants to make peace,” Trump said in an interview with the New York Post. “That’s new.” He revealed that Zelensky expressed interest in a ceasefire as a way to end the nearly three-year war in Ukraine, which has caused catastrophic loss of life. “When you lose 700,000 people, it’s time,” Trump said. “It’s not going to end until there’s a peace.”
Although specifics were not discussed, Trump hinted at crafting a strategy to resolve the conflict, calling it a “ridiculous war.” He also pointed to broader geopolitical dynamics, noting that Russia’s engagement in Ukraine has hampered its involvement elsewhere.
Conversations with Macron: NATO and Restoration Efforts
Trump’s itinerary included a trilateral meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron and Zelensky. With Macron, the discussion focused on NATO, where Trump reiterated his long-standing demand for member nations to meet financial obligations.
“NATO is good as long as they pay their bills,” Trump asserted. “When I got involved, nobody paid. Then they paid.” He lauded Macron’s leadership and complimented the extensive restoration work at Notre Dame, calling it “painstaking” and praising the French president’s efforts.
A Surprising Encounter with Jill Biden
Despite years of political rivalry, Trump described his conversation with First Lady Jill Biden as cordial. “She couldn’t have been nicer,” he remarked, emphasizing that political differences should not overshadow personal interactions. “It’s politics. You have to get used to it,” he added.
Discussions with Prince William: Royal Health and Family
Trump’s diplomacy extended across the Channel, where he met Prince William. He shared updates on the health of the Royal Family, mentioning that both King Charles and Kate Middleton are battling cancer. “The prince loves his father and wife very much,” Trump said, describing their half-hour talk as “great.”
Energized by Giorgia Meloni
In a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Trump was impressed by her energy and dynamism. “She’s a real live wire,” he said, noting that they spent significant time together during a dinner with other world leaders.
A Vision for a Unified Future
As he reflected on the series of high-profile meetings, Trump expressed hope for collective efforts to address global challenges. “We got along great,” he said of the world leaders present in Paris. “Hopefully, we can straighten out the world a little bit.”
The reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral served as a symbolic backdrop for these conversations, merging moments of cultural significance with pressing international issues.
