A bombshell report from the Committee on House Administration’s Subcommittee on Oversight has raised serious questions about former Rep. Liz Cheney’s conduct during her role as vice chair of the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot. The report accuses Cheney of engaging in witness tampering by secretly coaching testimony from a key witness, Cassidy Hutchinson, without the knowledge of Hutchinson’s lawyer.
The subcommittee is urging the Department of Justice to investigate Cheney’s alleged actions, emphasizing that the request is not about political “revenge” but ensuring the integrity of congressional oversight.
Allegations of Secret Coaching
The report cites evidence that Cheney, a Wyoming Republican, contacted Hutchinson via the encrypted Signal app ahead of her testimony. Hutchinson, a former White House aide, delivered high-profile testimony before the Jan. 6 committee, including claims that former President Donald Trump allegedly lunged for the steering wheel of his vehicle when Secret Service agents refused to drive him to the Capitol on Jan. 6.
However, Hutchinson’s dramatic allegations were contradicted by other witnesses, raising questions about the authenticity and preparation of her testimony.
“Secret communications with a witness are far outside the rules for any investigator, including members of Congress,” the subcommittee’s report states.
Fallout from the Jan. 6 Hearings
The revelations cast a shadow over the work of the Jan. 6 committee, which critics have long argued was more about political theater than uncovering the truth. With Hollywood consultants reportedly involved in staging the hearings, some members of Congress and commentators viewed the investigation as a partisan attack on Trump and his allies.
“Congressional hearings shouldn’t be purely partisan attacks on political enemies, but that’s exactly what Pelosi’s Jan. 6 probe turned into,” one source familiar with the subcommittee’s findings said.
The report suggests that Cheney’s actions add “an outright criminal element to the perversion of House proceedings.”
Justice Department Involvement Unlikely
While the subcommittee has flagged Cheney’s conduct for a potential DOJ investigation, many believe the Biden administration’s Justice Department is unlikely to pursue the matter. Even under a potential Trump administration, the DOJ may prioritize other issues.
Critics of Cheney argue that her actions demonstrate a lack of understanding about the principles of democracy, particularly given her vocal stance on “protecting democracy” during the 2022 and 2024 elections.
The allegations against Cheney are now poised to reignite debates over the conduct of congressional investigations and the balance between political accountability and partisanship. As the fallout continues, one question looms: will Cheney’s alleged actions face the scrutiny they deserve, or will they be swept under the rug in Washington’s ever-polarized climate?
