A bold and unconventional idea is stirring in Republican circles: billionaire Elon Musk as Speaker of the House. The proposal, while not widely supported, underscores the escalating frustration among conservatives with House GOP leadership and the brewing chaos over government funding.
“Nothing’s Impossible”: Musk as Speaker
The notion gained traction after Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) highlighted on X (formerly Twitter) that the Speaker of the House doesn’t need to be a member of Congress. “Nothing would disrupt the swamp more than electing Elon Musk,” Paul wrote, adding that such a move would leave the “uniparty” establishment reeling.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) joined the chorus, suggesting, “I’d be open to supporting Elon Musk for Speaker of the House.” Greene, who chairs the newly minted DOGE Caucus (Department of Government Efficiency), has aligned with Musk’s vision of slashing government waste.
The 53-year-old Tesla and SpaceX CEO, often seen as a disruptor, has become an influential figure in conservative politics. Recently, he joined entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy in brainstorming cost-cutting measures with GOP lawmakers, further fueling speculation about his political ambitions.
A Symbol of GOP Frustration
The idea of Musk wielding the gavel comes as Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) faces backlash from within his party. Johnson, 52, has been criticized for his handling of a bipartisan government funding bill that was ultimately torpedoed by Republican resistance.
President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect J.D. Vance were among those urging GOP lawmakers to reject the measure. Their intervention dealt a significant blow to Johnson’s leadership, raising questions about his ability to unify the party.
Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) hinted at the need for a radical change, saying, “If new leadership is inevitable, we need to think outside the box. Someone like Elon Musk or Vivek Ramaswamy could revolutionize everything.”
Democrats Weigh In—With Jabs
Democrats, meanwhile, have mocked the idea of Musk as Speaker. Representative Greg Casar (D-Texas) quipped, “If Elon Musk is cosplaying co-President, why not just hand him the gavel?” Senator Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) echoed the sentiment, calling on Johnson to “hand over” his position to the billionaire.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) lamented the disarray in the Republican ranks, saying, “I don’t even know who I’m negotiating with on government funding anymore.”
A Party Divided
This isn’t the first time Republicans have entertained unconventional candidates for Speaker. Earlier this year, Trump himself was floated as a potential candidate during a leadership crisis that followed the ousting of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).
With the next Speaker’s election set for January 3, 2025, the stakes are high. If Johnson fails to secure his position, an impasse could disrupt the certification of the 2024 presidential election just days later.
Trump, however, remains optimistic about Johnson’s chances. “If the Speaker acts decisively and tough, he will easily remain in his position,” Trump told Fox News.
A Billionaire in the People’s House?
While the idea of Elon Musk as Speaker may be more fantasy than reality, it highlights the GOP’s internal struggles and the growing appetite for disruption in Washington. Whether this unconventional proposal gains momentum or fizzles out, it’s clear that the Republican Party is at a crossroads—and anything seems possible.
