Arsonist Captured by Residents Amid L.A Wildfires (Video)

A swift response by alert Woodland Hills residents led to the arrest of an arson suspect Thursday evening, just miles from the blazing Kenneth Fire. The wildfire, which has scorched over 1,000 acres in Calabasas and West Hills, continues to threaten homes and lives as fire crews battle to contain the flames.

Authorities say the suspect was caught attempting to light a fire in the 21700 block of Ybarra Road around 4:30 p.m. Los Angeles police confirmed that vigilant neighbors subdued the man until officers arrived.

“We heard yelling and saw a man holding what looked like a propane tank or flamethrower,” said Renata Grinshpun, a witness to the dramatic citizen’s arrest. “Neighbors ran out, surrounded him, and got him on his knees. Someone brought out zip ties and rope. We weren’t letting him get away.”

Grinshpun described the chaos as neighbors worked together to stop a potential disaster. “One man shouted, ‘Drop what you’re holding! He’s trying to start a fire!’ We banded together as a group, and it worked.”

Photos shared online show police handcuffing the suspect as neighbors stood nearby, visibly shaken but resolute.’

The suspect’s identity has not been released, and authorities have yet to confirm if he’s linked to the Kenneth Fire, which erupted earlier in the afternoon. “At this time, we believe this was a criminal act,” said Sean Dinse of LAPD’s Topanga Division. “The investigation is ongoing.”

The Kenneth Fire, reported around 2:30 p.m. in the Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space, quickly spread through dry brush, fueled by high winds and unseasonably warm temperatures. By nightfall, the fire had consumed over 1,000 acres and was only 35% contained.

Firefighters are working tirelessly to protect homes in the Calabasas and Hidden Hills areas. Helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft are dropping water and flame retardant, creating defensive barriers. “Every resource is being deployed to safeguard residents,” said Chief Elijah Martinez of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Southern California faces an onslaught of wildfires this week, including the Palisades Fire in Malibu and the Eaton Fire in Altadena. Experts point to the region’s prolonged drought and neglected forest management as contributing factors.

Local residents, many of whom are evacuating, expressed frustration at the growing frequency of wildfires. “This is a failure of leadership,” said Barbara Jenson, a retired schoolteacher and Woodland Hills resident. “We need real solutions, not endless excuses.”

As crews continue their battle, officials urge residents to remain vigilant. “If you see something, say something. Your quick action can save lives,” said Chief Martinez.

With wildfire season becoming a year-round challenge, residents are reminded to prepare emergency plans and kits. For more resources, visit ReadyForWildfires.org.

This incident highlights the power of a unified community in the face of danger. “It’s times like these that show what we’re made of,” Grinshpun said. “We take care of our own.”
