Tennis Star Claims He was ‘Poisoned’ But Experts Cast Doubt

Novak Djokovic’s recent claims that he was poisoned by food during his 2022 detention in a Melbourne hotel have reopened a debate surrounding his highly publicized visa saga. Experts, while acknowledging the possibility, have largely dismissed the likelihood of food poisoning as the cause of his alleged symptoms.

Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam winner, gave an interview to GQ magazine earlier this month, where he revealed that he believed the food he ate during his five-day detention led to serious health problems. “I realized that in that hotel in Melbourne I was fed with some food that poisoned me,” Djokovic shared, adding that tests later revealed alarmingly high levels of lead and mercury in his system. “I had the lead, very high level of lead and mercury,” Djokovic said, suggesting it could have been a factor in his health struggles.

However, experts are cautious in backing the Serbian tennis star’s claims. Dr. Barbara Cardoso, a nutritional biochemist at Monash University, stated that while Australians are exposed to low levels of lead and mercury, the levels required to cause poisoning are typically much higher than what would be found in everyday food. “Mercury can be present in food, but the concentration in fish and shellfish found in Australia is relatively low,” Cardoso explained. “It requires time for that mercury to accumulate in the body to cause poisoning.”

Dr. Catharine Fleming, a senior lecturer in public health at Western Sydney University, echoed similar concerns. “Without clinical test results, it’s difficult to establish causation between the consumption of food and the poisoning Djokovic claims,” Fleming said.

While there’s little evidence to support the idea that Djokovic’s food was contaminated, some experts do believe there were serious issues with the quarantine arrangements during the pandemic. Dr. Fleming herself led a study of food quality provided during quarantine, especially for families with children, which revealed concerns about the inadequacy of food provisions. Some even claimed that the food in the Park Hotel, which housed Djokovic, was infested with maggots.

A source familiar with the Park Hotel also noted that the facility was primarily used as a detention center for non-citizens, including asylum seekers, many of whom reported substandard living conditions and poor-quality meals.

Djokovic’s claims, however, have sparked more than just medical debate. Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios, known for his outspoken views, expressed his disapproval of how Djokovic was treated in 2022. “We treated him like crap. We shouldn’t have done that,” Kyrgios said, referring to the way Australia handled Djokovic’s visa cancellation. Although Kyrgios wasn’t aware of Djokovic’s latest claims about poisoning, he agreed that the treatment was unjust.

At the time, Djokovic was detained after the Australian government canceled his visa, citing his unvaccinated status as a threat to public health. The decision sparked public outcry, with some criticizing the government’s handling of the issue as politically motivated. Djokovic was eventually deported after a failed legal battle.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, speaking on Friday, refused to comment on Djokovic’s claims, stating he had not seen the interview. “I wish Mr. Djokovic all the best on the court,” Albanese said, focusing on the upcoming Australian Open rather than revisiting the controversies of the past.

Despite the ongoing debates surrounding his detention, Djokovic, now focused on the upcoming 2025 Australian Open, is ready to leave the past behind. “I would appreciate not talking more in detail about that,” he told reporters when asked about the poisoning allegations. “I want to focus on the tennis and why I’m here.”

As Djokovic prepares for his next big tournament, the question remains: Was the food poisoning a serious health issue, or a misinterpretation of his symptoms? The answer, it seems, may never be fully revealed.
