Prince Harry Faces Another Set Back

Prince Harry’s sustainability initiative, Travalyst, has hit another bump in the road. India Gary-Martin, the organization’s chair, has stepped down after less than two years in the role. Her departure has sparked speculation about the stability of Harry’s ventures.

Travalyst, founded by Prince Harry in 2019, aims to promote sustainable travel by collaborating with major players like Expedia and TripAdvisor. Gary-Martin, a veteran in corporate leadership, took on the chair position in 2023, bringing her expertise in diversity and inclusion to the table. At the time, she called the role a “honor” and emphasized the importance of integrating diverse voices into sustainability conversations. However, as of late 2024, Gary-Martin has resigned to focus on her own consulting firm, Leadership for Execs.

In a statement, Travalyst confirmed the transition, announcing that former Google executive Gianni Marostica would step into the leadership role. CEO Sarah Davey praised Marostica as a “changemaker” whose expertise would help advance Travalyst’s mission. She added, “His deep knowledge of sustainable practices will be instrumental in shaping the future of travel.”

Gary-Martin’s resignation marks the 19th departure of a senior staffer associated with Harry and Meghan Markle over the past five years. Critics have pointed to a recurring theme of short tenures among the Sussexes’ staff.

“It’s becoming a pattern that’s hard to ignore,” said royal commentator Richard Eden. “While the exact reasons for these resignations vary, it’s clear that working for Harry and Meghan comes with unique challenges.”

A source familiar with the situation described Gary-Martin’s exit as “unsurprising,” citing the high expectations and constant scrutiny tied to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s projects.

Despite the leadership changes, Travalyst continues to champion sustainable travel. The organization’s stated goal is to provide “credible, consistent sustainability information” to empower travelers and businesses to make informed choices. Harry himself has been described as deeply committed to the cause.

In September 2024, CEO Sarah Davey commended Harry’s collaborative approach. “He never imposed his own vision,” she told People. “Instead, he asked, ‘What needs to happen, and how can I help facilitate it?’ That mindset has been transformative.”

This latest shakeup adds to a series of challenges for Harry and Meghan. Last year, their chief of staff, Josh Kettler, left his role after just three months. More recently, Meghan’s anticipated lifestyle brand, American Riviera Orchard, has yet to launch despite much fanfare around her appointment as CEO.

For some observers, the frequent staff turnover raises questions about the sustainability of the Sussexes’ initiatives. Others argue that their projects are breaking new ground and encountering inevitable growing pains.

As the spotlight remains on Travalyst and its new leadership, Harry’s ability to steer the organization through its latest transition will be closely watched. Whether this marks a new chapter of stability or yet another challenge remains to be seen.
