NFL Star in Bizarre Election Showdown with His Former Team Doctor

Former NFL kicker Jay Feely is heading into one of the strangest political matchups of the 2026 election cycle, and this one comes with a twist straight out of a sports movie.

Feely, the former New York Jets and Arizona Cardinals kicker who has become a high-profile America First Republican candidate, will face Democrat Amish Shah in Arizona’s 1st Congressional District this November. But Shah is not just another political opponent. He once worked as a team doctor for the Jets while Feely was on the roster.

That means voters in the Phoenix suburbs are about to see a former NFL player square off against one of the doctors who once stood on the sidelines of his football career.

Feely, 50, secured the Republican nomination on Tuesday after defeating former state Rep. Joseph Chaplik, aided by a major endorsement from President Donald Trump. The former president personally vouched for Feely in a video released earlier this month, calling him a friend, a “great athlete,” and a “true America First conservative.”

“I’m asking you to go out and vote for Jay Feely, a friend of mine and a great athlete to represent Arizona’s first congressional district,” Trump said in the endorsement video. “Jay is a true America First conservative and a natural-born leader.”

The Trump endorsement proved to be a powerful boost in a district Republicans are determined to hold as Democrats look for any opening to claw back control of the House. Feely has leaned hard into his relationship with Trump, saying the two have known each other for two decades and that he wants to fight for the president’s agenda in Washington.

“I also have to thank President Trump. He and I have been friends for two decades,” Feely said at his victory party Tuesday, according to People. “We know how important it is to stand up for him and the policies that he’s trying to impact our country with.”

Feely’s path to politics has been anything but ordinary. After a long NFL career that included stops with seven teams, including the Jets and Cardinals, he moved into sports broadcasting before entering the political arena. But he has said the turning point came after the 2024 assassination attempt against Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania.

“The lawfare that Democrats did against President Trump and you watched him get shot,” Feely told Fox News in April 2025. “That was a big moment for me. I remember starting to really think about running for office the day that he got shot.”

Now, Feely is trying to turn his name recognition, Trump backing, and conservative message into a seat in Congress.

Standing in his way is Shah, 48, an emergency room doctor and former Arizona state representative who won the Democratic primary over Marlene Galán-Woods, a candidate backed by House Democrats. Shah wasted no time pointing out the odd connection between himself and Feely.

“I hope that I can get their endorsement over Jay Feely,” Shah joked Tuesday, according to The New York Times.

Shah worked as a Jets physician from 2008 to 2013, a period that overlapped with Feely’s time on the team during the 2008 and 2009 seasons. He also led the franchise’s Airway Management Team, according to his official state legislature biography.

That unlikely backstory gives the race a bizarre personal angle, but the stakes are very real.

Arizona’s 1st Congressional District, which includes northern suburbs of Phoenix, is expected to be one of the most closely watched House races in the country. The seat is currently held by Rep. David Schweikert, who left it open while unsuccessfully running for governor in the Republican primary. Schweikert was defeated by fellow Republican Rep. Andy Biggs.

Democrats see the district as a possible pickup opportunity, while Republicans are hoping Feely can keep it in GOP hands with Trump’s endorsement behind him.

For Feely, the race is about turning conservative frustration into political action. For Shah, it is a chance to flip a key Arizona seat blue. And for voters, it is an election matchup few could have predicted: a MAGA-backed former NFL kicker battling the doctor who once worked the sidelines during his playing days.

November’s contest may be local, but with control of Congress on the line, this former football connection could become one of the most talked-about races in America.
