President Donald J. Trump is turning up the heat on Maine’s Democrat Governor Janet Mills, calling her out publicly for ducking accountability after a heated standoff over transgender athletes in women’s sports.
“I’ve heard nothing — not a single word — from Governor Mills since her outrageous comments at the White House Governor’s Conference,” Trump wrote in a Saturday morning post on Truth Social. “The State of Maine may have issued a quiet apology, but we need to hear it straight from the Governor herself.”
At the center of the controversy: a public exchange between Trump and Mills last month, when the Maine Democrat pushed back against Trump’s executive order barring biological males from competing in women’s sports. The executive order, signed earlier this year, reaffirms protections for women’s athletic programs and ties federal funding to compliance.
During the confrontation, Mills reportedly accused Trump of “targeting vulnerable youth,” a claim the former president says is not only false, but “legally reckless.”
“She tried to score political points by undermining federal law and attacking fairness in women’s sports,” Trump added. “Before we move forward, she must give a full, public apology — and make it crystal clear she won’t challenge the rule of law again.”
Biden Appointees Quiet, But Trump Holds the Line
Behind the scenes, the standoff sparked a brief funding freeze from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to the University of Maine System — a group of eight public universities — over its refusal to implement the order. The USDA later reinstated the funding after Maine reportedly agreed to comply.
“This is about protecting opportunities for women,” said a senior Trump administration official. “We’re not going to let radical activists erase women’s sports. Period.”
Despite the state’s quiet compliance, Trump says the buck stops with Mills.
“The Governor made the statements. The Governor must correct them,” he insisted. “This is not just about Maine. It’s about sending a message nationwide — biological men do not belong in women’s locker rooms or on their playing fields.”
Free Speech Fight Brews in Maine
Meanwhile, a related firestorm is raging in Augusta. State Rep. Laurel Libby (R-Auburn), a vocal critic of transgender policies, was censured by Maine’s Democrat-controlled House for posting the identity of a trans athlete involved in a local girls’ team.
Stripped of her ability to vote or speak on the House floor, Libby filed a lawsuit to restore her rights — arguing the punishment violates the Constitution.
“I was elected to serve my constituents, not be silenced by political bullies,” Libby said. “I won’t be forced to apologize for standing up for truth and protecting our daughters.”
The Boston Globe, no conservative outlet, criticized Maine Democrats for the censure, calling Libby “a free speech martyr” and warning that the move may backfire.
“They turned her into a symbol — and handed her a microphone,” the editorial board wrote.
What Comes Next?
Gov. Mills, who has yet to respond publicly, now faces pressure not only from Trump, but also from a growing coalition of parents, athletes, and lawmakers demanding transparency and accountability.
Trump, for his part, says the issue won’t be swept under the rug.
“This is about the future of our country. About fairness. About common sense,” Trump said. “Governor Mills — the country is waiting.”
