Trouble is brewing inside ABC’s glossy new Manhattan headquarters—and insiders say it could explode into a full-blown morning show meltdown.
In a twist straight out of a prime-time soap, Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan—once daytime TV’s golden duo—are about to be forced into dangerously close quarters, nearly a decade after their ugly, very public breakup.
And ABC staffers? They’re reportedly bracing for fireworks.
ABC Shuffles the Deck—And Sparks Old Tensions
The chaos comes as ABC prepares to move its top-rated morning show, Good Morning America, out of Times Square and into the newly christened Robert A. Iger Building in downtown Manhattan this June. The catch? Ripa’s show, Live with Kelly and Mark, is already broadcasting from the same building—just down the hall.
“It’s not just the same building—it’s the same hallway,” a network source told us. “They’ll be a few feet apart. You’ll be able to hear Michael’s voice from Kelly’s dressing room. That’s how close it is.”
Worse still, they’ll share an elevator and studio-level entrance—raising the odds of an accidental run-in to red-alert levels.
A Daytime Divorce That Never Healed
Ripa and Strahan have not spoken since their dramatic 2016 split, when Strahan blindsided his co-host by jumping to GMA without so much as a heads-up. Ripa was so furious she walked off the set for a week, forcing then-ABC News president Ben Sherwood to grovel with a public apology.
“It was a betrayal,” one insider close to the drama said. “She was left in the dark—and she’s never forgotten it.”
Strahan, for his part, has publicly said he’s “moved on,” but he hasn’t exactly sung Ripa’s praises. He’s repeatedly described feeling like her “sidekick,” not a partner, and in 2020 told The New York Times there were “things going on behind the scenes” that made it clear it was “time to go.”
Kelly Ripa’s Revenge?
Adding fuel to the fire, Ripa revealed in a 2022 Variety interview that she had to physically force her way into a bigger office after Strahan left Live!—because execs had allegedly reserved the nicer one for him.
“They told me they were saving it for the next guy,” she said. “I was in what used to be the janitor’s closet. So I just moved my stuff.”
That comment alone was seen by many as a public shot across the bow—and proof that Ripa’s wounds hadn’t healed.
ABC on High Alert
Behind the scenes, sources say ABC executives are scrambling to keep the peace. Plans are already in motion to stagger their schedules and limit backstage overlap. But insiders admit that with shows airing back-to-back from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., the chances of a chilly encounter are very real.
“If their cars pull up at the same time, it could get tense fast,” said one producer. “People are already gossiping about how to handle it.”
One network executive insists the fears are overblown. “They’re professionals. They’ll handle it,” the exec claimed. “This isn’t high school.”
But staffers aren’t so sure.
“They’re both powerful, both opinionated, and both still carrying baggage from 2016,” another insider said. “That’s a volatile mix. And when you add shared elevators and tight hallways? You’ve got a ticking time bomb.”
Backstage Battle Brewing Across Shows
The drama isn’t limited to Ripa and Strahan. ABC is relocating all its New York productions into the same eco-friendly tower, including The View and Tamron Hall. That’s caused its own friction, with staff complaining about shared studios, cramped dressing rooms, and downgraded office spaces.
“There are no big-shot offices anymore,” one employee said. “It’s one-size-fits-all—even for talent.”
While the building boasts rooftop gardens and a plush theater, employees say it’s all surface-level gloss.
“This place looks amazing on a tour, but it feels like a sardine can when you work here,” said one staffer.
The Ratings Pressure Is On
Strahan and his GMA co-hosts Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos have helped ABC dominate mornings—until recently. NBC’s Today is closing in, even edging out GMA in early 2025 by just 7,000 viewers.
Meanwhile, Ripa’s Live! continues to rule its time slot, pulling over 2.3 million daily viewers.
So with two of ABC’s most valuable brands now operating inches apart, the stakes couldn’t be higher.
“It’s like putting two rival quarterbacks in the same locker room,” said one veteran staffer. “You hope they play nice, but deep down, everyone knows it’s a grudge match.”
And with egos, ratings, and old wounds in the mix, this new era of ABC may be anything but smooth sailing.
