A quiet Minneapolis afternoon turned into chaos Tuesday when a gunman opened fire on a group of people standing along a sidewalk, killing one person and injuring six others in a shocking act of violence near a Catholic high school.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara revealed that investigators believe at least one victim was “clearly targeted” in the shooting. Witnesses reported hearing a rapid burst of gunfire around 1:30 p.m., and police confirmed approximately 30 rounds were fired.
“This level of firepower unleashed in broad daylight is completely sickening and unacceptable,” O’Hara said during a press briefing. “The damage done to some of these victims is unspeakable. Thankfully, we don’t have more fatalities.”
Authorities believe the shooter used a high-velocity rifle, given the extensive injuries and damage left behind. Several nearby vehicles were riddled with bullets.
The victims, all believed to be adults, were standing across the street from DeLaSalle Catholic High School when the shooting began. Students were not injured, but parents rushed to the area as panic spread through the neighborhood.
“I heard what sounded like fireworks at first, and then people just started running,” said local resident Mariah Thompson, who lives two blocks from the scene. “It’s terrifying. This is right by a school.”
The shooter fled the scene in a vehicle before police arrived and remains at large. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage and urging anyone with information to come forward.
“We’re doing everything we possibly can to identify those responsible for this violence,” O’Hara said.
The Minneapolis shooting is just the latest in a string of high-profile incidents involving military-style firearms in public spaces. According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been over 470 mass shootings in the U.S. so far in 2025 — an average of nearly two per day.
“It’s an epidemic,” said Dr. Alan McBride, a criminology professor at the University of Minnesota. “When high-powered rifles are this accessible, moments like this become almost inevitable.”
As police continue their search for the gunman, residents are left grappling with fear and frustration. “It’s not just another statistic when it happens in your backyard,” said Minneapolis father David Keller. “We don’t feel safe anymore.”
Authorities are asking anyone with tips to contact the Minneapolis Police Department immediately.

Minneapolis? what else is new there? Place is full of somalians and they all smell badly.
Yawn
This isn’t a problem of guns in the hands of law abiding citizens, this is gang and criminal activity. Democratic cities have been soft on the criminals and this is the result of that. The politicians don’t want to believe this is of their own making so blame the guns. Guns don’t kill people – people kill people!!
Cut the high powered military style rifle crap. We don’t have a gun problem here in the United States. We have a societal breakdown problem. And it’s the very reason those of us who are normal people need to own guns to protect us from the subhumans out there. Don’t even begin to blame guns for the results of today’s political mismanagement in our nation or the breakdown of the family unit environment.
