Five Kids Found Locked in “Dungeon-Like” Room in Pennsylvania Horror

A Pennsylvania couple has been arrested after authorities discovered five children locked inside what investigators described as a “dungeon” — a filthy, camera-monitored room secured with deadbolts, boarded windows, and no way to escape.

On August 8, Pennsylvania State Police were called to the Redstone Township home of James Russell, 65, and Carly Kahl, 41, to assist Fayette County Children and Youth Services after a disturbing tip about children living in “deplorable conditions.”

Inside, officers uncovered a nightmare. The five children — ages 5 to 14 — were found trapped in a tiny bedroom. The windows were boarded up. Feces smeared the walls. Fleas infested the room. There were no beds, almost no clothing, and only scraps of food.

Trooper Ally Wilson, one of the first on scene, described the conditions bluntly:

“It’s sickening — that’s the only word I can use for what we saw and what these children endured.”

According to the criminal complaint, the children were routinely locked inside at night and for much of the day. The bedroom door had three separate deadbolts on the outside — and no handle on the inside.

Investigators say Russell also installed hardwired surveillance cameras that streamed directly into his bedroom so he could monitor the kids’ every move.

“This room functioned as a dungeon,” the complaint reads.

When questioned about the locks, Russell reportedly told police he would “not be removing the locks from the bedroom door for any reason,” according to WPXI.

The children are now in protective custody. In the weeks since their rescue, they’ve shared harrowing details with investigators.

According to authorities, the kids said their father smoked marijuana all day and failed to care for them. They also claimed Russell once ordered Kahl to threaten one child with a Taser.

When police executed a search warrant on August 28, they found a stun gun, a replica pistol, marijuana, and other drugs.

Fayette County District Attorney Mike Aubele called the findings “deeply disturbing”:

“It appears these children were being held in captivity. We found cameras wired to another room so they could be observed. And there’s absolutely no justification for using a stun gun — lethal or not — against a child.”

Court records show Russell has a criminal history. In 2006, he pleaded guilty to harassment and was arrested the same year for driving under the influence. He was later charged with a probation violation in 2012.

Both Russell and Kahl now face a long list of charges, including:

• Endangering the welfare of children
• Aggravated assault
• Reckless endangerment
• Use of an incapacitation device
• Multiple drug-related offenses

Bail has been denied for both suspects.

Authorities say the case came to light thanks to a “brave family member” who reported the situation to Pennsylvania’s ChildLine system.

“Law enforcement can’t be in every household every minute of every day,” District Attorney Aubele said. “We need people to come forward and think of these children.”

Trooper Wilson echoed that sentiment, adding she hopes justice is swift:

“I want these parents to go to jail and answer for what they’ve done.”
