A California urgent care clinic is under fire after a group of employees was caught posting a disturbing TikTok video mocking patients — and the fallout has been swift.
The viral clip, recorded inside Sansum Clinic’s urgent care facility in Santa Barbara, showed several smiling medical workers posing next to bodily fluids left on exam tables. In one image, a staffer gave a thumbs-up over a stain with the caption, “Guess the substance.” Another worker stuck her tongue out next to a large stain, as if making fun of the patient who left it behind.
The video, posted by TikTok user @angieuncut, was quickly deleted — but not before screen recordings spread across Reddit, X, and Instagram, sparking outrage nationwide.
On Reddit’s r/SantaBarbara forum, where the video gained traction, thousands of furious comments poured in within hours.
“I’m a nurse, and I’m speechless,” one commenter wrote. “This is unprofessional, unethical, and humiliating for patients.”
Another user vowed action: “I’m reporting this directly to Sutter Health executives. These employees will regret posting this dehumanizing garbage.”
Sansum Clinic, which partners with the massive nonprofit health network Sutter Health, moved quickly to contain the scandal.
“Patient trust and dignity are always our top priority,” the clinic said in an Instagram statement. “Any behavior that violates those standards is unacceptable.”
Sutter Health echoed the outrage, confirming all employees involved had been terminated.
“We are deeply concerned about the disrespectful social media post made by a former employee,” a spokesperson told KTLA. “A full review is underway to ensure this never happens again.”
Interestingly, Sutter revealed that the video was uploaded by a former worker who hadn’t been employed there for two months — but several current employees willingly participated, costing them their jobs.
The scandal has caught the attention of patient rights advocates, some calling for federal investigations into patient privacy violations.
“This isn’t just about bad behavior,” said Dr. Melissa Carver, a healthcare ethics expert. “If any identifiable patient information was exposed, this could trigger HIPAA violations and open the clinic up to massive liability.”
With President Trump’s administration pushing for stricter enforcement of patient privacy protections in 2025, legal experts say Sansum Clinic could face heavy fines if regulators get involved.
Despite the video’s removal and the TikTok account going private, outrage continues to spread. The hashtag #SansumScandal has trended on X for two days, with users demanding better oversight of medical staff behavior.
“This shows a total breakdown of professionalism,” one user posted. “If I can’t trust urgent care not to mock me, where can I go?”
The Santa Barbara County Department of Public Health is reportedly monitoring the situation closely. While no criminal charges have been filed, experts say this could set a precedent for how clinics handle staff conduct in the age of viral social media scandals.
“This is a wake-up call for the entire healthcare industry,” Dr. Carver added. “One TikTok video can destroy patient trust in seconds.”
