President Donald Trump will posthumously award conservative firebrand Charlie Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom, calling him “a martyr for truth and liberty” just over a month after the 31-year-old activist was fatally shot during a college speaking event in Utah.
The White House confirmed the ceremony will take place October 14 — what would have been Kirk’s 32nd birthday — in the newly renovated Rose Garden. Trump is expected to personally present the medal to Kirk’s widow, Erika, in a private but nationally televised event.
“Charlie gave his life defending the ideals that make America great,” Trump said in a statement released Thursday evening. “He stood against the radical left, fought for faith, family, and freedom, and paid the ultimate price. He will be remembered as one of America’s boldest patriots.”
Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, was shot and killed on September 10 while delivering a speech at Utah Valley University. The suspected gunman, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, has been charged with aggravated murder and domestic terrorism. Prosecutors say the attack was politically motivated, sparking outrage across the conservative movement and leading to widespread calls for stronger protections for free speech on college campuses.
At a massive memorial rally in Glendale, Arizona, attended by thousands of supporters, Trump delivered an emotional tribute to his longtime ally. “Charlie’s message of faith and courage inspired millions,” he said. “They tried to silence him — but his voice will echo forever.”
Erika Kirk, who has remained publicly composed despite her loss, told the crowd she has chosen forgiveness. “I forgive the man who took my husband’s life,” she said softly. “Charlie wouldn’t want hatred to win. He’d want us to stand firm and keep speaking the truth.”
Born in suburban Chicago, Kirk became one of the most influential figures in conservative youth politics after founding Turning Point USA in 2012 at just 18 years old. Under his leadership, the organization grew into a powerful network with over 3,000 student chapters nationwide. He was known for his fiery debates, relentless defense of traditional values, and loyalty to President Trump.
Trump has long praised Kirk as one of the movement’s “greatest voices.” Sources close to the administration said the Medal of Freedom was an “obvious choice,” with one senior adviser noting, “President Trump saw Charlie as a son in the movement — someone who carried the torch for a new generation of patriots.”
The Medal of Freedom ceremony will also mark Trump’s first major public event since his return to the White House for a second term earlier this year. According to insiders, the president personally requested that the Rose Garden be restored to its “classic American form” before the tribute.
As preparations continue, thousands of Turning Point members are expected to gather outside the White House for a candlelight vigil. Flags at federal buildings nationwide will fly at half-staff through the weekend.
“Charlie’s legacy lives on,” Trump said. “And America will never forget the young man who refused to back down.”
