‘The View’ Hosts Slam Fetterman on Live TV Over Shutdown Surrender (Video)

Sen. John Fetterman, the embattled Pennsylvania Democrat who’s drawn ire from both sides of the aisle in recent weeks, walked into hostile territory Tuesday — and walked away bruised.

During a heated appearance on ABC’s “The View,” co-host Sunny Hostin torched Fetterman for voting to end the 41-day government shutdown, accusing him of surrendering Democratic leverage at the worst possible time.

“Why bring a butter knife to a gunfight?” Hostin jabbed. “Are you seriously betting that the GOP will negotiate on healthcare in good faith? If you’re wrong, half a million Pennsylvanians could get crushed by rising costs.”

The confrontation played out live on national television — and it didn’t go unnoticed.

Fetterman was one of eight senators—including some centrists and independents—who crossed party lines Monday night to back a continuing resolution (CR) that reopened the federal government. The shutdown had dragged on for nearly six weeks, as President Donald Trump stood firm on budget cuts and border security funding.

Fetterman joined:

  • Sen. Angus King (I-ME)
  • Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV)
  • Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH)
  • Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-NH)
  • Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-NV)
  • Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA)
  • Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL)

All voted in favor of the Trump-supported stopgap bill, despite fury from the progressive base.

“I didn’t sign up to keep 42 million Americans guessing where their next meal comes from,” Fetterman told the panel, citing disruptions in SNAP benefits and military pay. “This isn’t about left vs. right. This is about turning the government back on and protecting working families.”

But Hostin wasn’t buying it — and neither were leading leftists. She quoted Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and California Governor Gavin Newsom, who both slammed the move as “short-sighted” and “dangerous.”

She also referenced Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) — ironically — who said the GOP gave up too much ground. Fetterman fired back, rolling his eyes at the mention of MTG.

“She’s the last person I’d ever take advice from. If Democrats are letting her set the tone, that’s on them,” Fetterman snapped.

Trying to shift the focus, Fetterman cited Virginia Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger, who had called the shutdown “unsustainable” despite Democratic election wins just days earlier.

“It’s chaos,” he said. “Federal workers are borrowing over half a billion dollars just to pay their bills. Enough is enough.”

Meanwhile, Chuck Schumer, the Senate Minority Leader, found himself under fire from his own party. Hostin declared his “days are over” if he can’t keep the Democratic caucus united.

President Trump, who remained largely silent during the segment, took to Truth Social afterward with a brief statement:

“Fetterman finally got something right. Now let’s finish the job: cut waste, fix the border, and KEEP AMERICA SAFE.”

In a rare twist, Fetterman has found himself backed by the Trump administration — and berated by his own team. While the shutdown may be over for now, the political fallout is only just beginning.

With 2026 midterms looming, Democrats are once again eating their own, while Republicans quietly watch them implode.

“This party’s eating itself alive,” said one GOP strategist. “And Fetterman’s caught in the middle with a butter knife.”

  1. Well when people have money & are still receiving paychecks it becomes all about them. Really sad they are worried about the people who are not citizens then the people who are born here & are going without the paychecks.
