President Donald Trump hit back hard after Michelle Obama slammed his $300 million White House renovation, saying the former first lady “doesn’t understand” the scale or vision of what he’s building.
In a fiery sit-down with Laura Ingraham on The Ingraham Angle Monday night, Trump defended the decision to tear down the East Wing—once home to the first lady’s offices—to make way for what he’s calling “one of the greatest ballrooms in the world.”
“It Was Falling Apart”
“The East Wing was a disaster,” Trump told Ingraham. “If you had an event, you couldn’t even fit 80 people. When it rained, the tent would flood with six inches of water. Total embarrassment. Now we’re building something truly magnificent.”
According to the president, the new 90,000-square-foot structure—funded entirely by private donors—will be a state-of-the-art ballroom modeled after “the great palaces of Europe,” while maintaining the White House’s classical symmetry. Construction began in late October following the East Wing’s demolition.
“This will be a place worthy of America,” Trump said. “You invite world leaders, you don’t want them sitting in a leaky tent.”
Michelle Obama Calls It “Denigrating”
Michelle Obama, who once oversaw the East Wing during her husband’s presidency, blasted the demolition as “denigrating” and “symbolic of how some people think about the role of the first lady.”
“When we talk about the East Wing, it’s the heart of the work of a first lady,” Obama told Vanity Fair. “To tear it down and pretend it doesn’t matter—it shows what you think of that role.”
She doubled down during a recent NBC interview, saying, “There’s no guidebook for being first lady. There’s barely a staff. Now we don’t even have a building.”
Democrats quickly rallied behind her comments, with Rep. Eric Swalwell and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries accusing Trump of “erasing history for vanity.” Former press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre called it “an insult to the legacy of every first lady.”
Trump Says Critics “Don’t Know the Facts”
Trump brushed off the backlash, insisting the original structure had already been heavily altered.
“That building had been redone at least twenty times,” he said. “They even added a floor that ruined the design. It looked like hell.”
Former White House aides confirmed the East Wing underwent major overhauls under several administrations, including Franklin D. Roosevelt’s in the 1940s and Ronald Reagan’s in the 1980s.
Architectural historian Daniel Fitzpatrick told The Post, “The East Wing has symbolic importance, but structurally it was a patchwork of updates. Trump’s project is ambitious—but it’s not unprecedented.”
A Ballroom Fit for State Power
The new venue, insiders say, will feature a domed ceiling, marble staircase, and glass gallery overlooking the South Lawn. “It’s not just a ballroom—it’s a statement,” said one source familiar with the blueprints. “Trump wants it to rival Versailles.”
Trump, meanwhile, teased a grand debut sometime in late 2026. “It’s going to be spectacular,” he said. “We’re doing something that will make the White House prouder, grander, and truly world-class.”
Despite the political noise, construction crews continue around the clock on what supporters are already calling Trump’s Ballroom of America.

Trump is an egomaniac jerk with no regard for history or what is appropriate! I can only hope there is enough historical data available to remake the space into what it was before Trump destroyed our history because of his over-inflated ego!!! Prof. Schlatter
Typical comment from an academic! Do you really want world leaders in leaky tents? I’ve been to events at the White House, have you. While I agree Trump is an ego maniac that doesn’t detract from the need or the fact no public funds are used. At Trump does know something about construction!!
Just wondering when did they think we cared about their opinion on anything. The Dem made a mess of our country now President Trump has to put it back together. What a big job to fix, they just need to fade away.
Mrs. Obama is NUTZ. She exists with her head up her behind!
