A Massachusetts man is behind bars after federal authorities say he posted repeated online threats against President Donald Trump, then confronted FBI agents with a sword during a tense standoff outside his home.
Andrew D. Emerald, 45, of Great Barrington, was arrested Wednesday after investigators say a series of alarming social media posts crossed the line from online rage to direct threats against the president. According to court documents, Emerald is accused of making multiple posts threatening Trump’s life, including one in which he allegedly referenced using a sword and tracking the president to his Florida residence.
In one of the posts cited by prosecutors, Emerald allegedly wrote, “I have very good reason to threaten his life and to go after it.”
Federal agents arrived at Emerald’s home Wednesday morning to take him into custody, but the situation quickly turned dramatic. Authorities said agents got no response after arriving at the property and were forced to use a battering ram to get inside.
That is when, according to investigators, Emerald came out holding a long sword.
Authorities said he refused repeated commands to drop the weapon and allegedly warned agents they would have to shoot him. The confrontation escalated into a standoff before Emerald eventually surrendered.
After taking him into custody, authorities said they recovered six blades from the home, including two long swords.
Emerald now faces eight counts of interstate transmission of threatening communications tied to the alleged posts. He pleaded not guilty in court on Wednesday, but a judge ordered him held until a hearing scheduled for Monday.
Each count carries a possible sentence of up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
The shocking arrest comes as threats against public officials continue to raise serious concerns, especially when they appear to move from angry rhetoric to possible action. In this case, prosecutors say the posts were not vague or offhand — they were repeated, specific, and deeply disturbing.
Now, Emerald’s case is set to move forward as authorities weigh the full scope of the alleged threats and the bizarre sword-wielding showdown that ended with federal agents surrounding his Massachusetts home.
