Steve Irwin’s Son Pinned Underneath 700-Pound Crocodile

Robert Irwin may have won over America with his charm and dancing skills, but the wildlife star just revealed he recently survived a terrifying brush with death involving a monster crocodile named after late-night host Jimmy Fallon.

During an appearance on NBC’s “The Tonight Show,” the 22-year-old son of legendary “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin shocked viewers when he described being “death rolled” by a massive 14-foot crocodile while working in the wilds of Australia.

And yes — the giant reptile was actually named Jimmy Fallon.

“He’s not a baby anymore,” Robert joked about the croc he named years ago. “He’s what we call a boss croc now. He’s huge.”

But what started as a funny story quickly turned intense.

Robert explained that as part of conservation work at the Australia Zoo, researchers sometimes have to physically jump onto crocodiles in order to safely study and track them — a dangerous method first pioneered by his late father.

That’s when things went horribly wrong.

“I jumped on the back of Jimmy Fallon,” Robert recalled. “And I kid you not, this 14-foot crocodile death rolled me.”

The young conservationist said the massive reptile suddenly spun with him trapped underneath.

“I’m stuck under him with my arm hanging out,” he said. “I’ve got maybe 700 pounds on top of me and I’m thinking, ‘What do I do?’”

Luckily, the crocodile rolled back the opposite direction moments later, allowing Robert to escape serious injury.

Still, the frightening moment served as another reminder of just how dangerous the Irwin family’s mission can be.

Robert has spent nearly his entire life following in the footsteps of his father, Steve Irwin, the beloved wildlife expert known around the world as “The Crocodile Hunter.” Steve tragically died in 2006 after being pierced in the chest by a stingray barb while filming a documentary on the Great Barrier Reef. Robert was only 2 years old at the time.

Since then, Robert, his sister Bindi, and their mother Terri have carried on Steve’s conservation legacy through the Australia Zoo and wildlife education projects around the globe.

“To continue this legacy is the honor of my life,” Robert wrote in a heartfelt Instagram tribute last year. “If I can make my dad proud, I’ve done my job.”

While Robert is best known for wrestling crocodiles and caring for exotic animals, he also became a surprise fan favorite in America after competing on “Dancing With the Stars” in 2025.

The Australian star ended up taking home the Mirrorball Trophy alongside pro partner Witney Carson — following in the footsteps of sister Bindi, who also won the competition back in 2015.

Robert later admitted he wasn’t sure how American audiences would react to him at first.

“Coming over from Australia, I didn’t know how it would go,” he previously said. “I didn’t realize how supportive America would be.”

Even after surviving giant crocodiles, Robert joked that one thing still scares him more than the wild animals of Australia: Los Angeles traffic.

“Give me a crocodile any day,” he laughed during a recent interview.
