A relaxing trip turned into a nightmare in seconds.
At least 11 people are dead and more than 30 others — including young children — were injured after a tourist bus suddenly veered off a highway and flipped onto its side in western Mexico, officials confirmed.
The devastating crash happened May 1 near the small town of Amatlán de Cañas, where the bus was headed to a recreational getaway. Instead, it ended up mangled in the mud along a hillside, with passengers’ belongings scattered across the wreckage.
Authorities say six victims were pronounced dead at the scene. Five more later died after being rushed to nearby hospitals, according to officials in Nayarit.
The bus had been traveling from Jalisco when it suddenly swerved off the road and overturned — though exactly what caused the driver to lose control remains under investigation.
The victims identified so far include Margarita Gutiérrez Villegas, Mario Reyna Chávez, 47-year-old Alejandro Lozano Morales, 33-year-old Paola Núñez Flores, and 62-year-old Martha Gutiérrez. Officials are still working to confirm the identities of the remaining victims.
Survivors ranged in age from just 4 years old to 47 — a chilling reminder of how entire families were caught up in the tragedy.
First responders rushed to the chaotic scene, where emergency crews, police, and forensic teams worked frantically among the debris. Images from the crash site show the bus lying on its side, caked in mud, with shattered windows and personal items hanging out or strewn across the ground.
Investigators have cordoned off the area as they try to piece together what went wrong in the moments before the deadly rollover.
For now, families are left grieving — and searching for answers after a trip meant for fun ended in heartbreak.
