The political heat on Joe Biden just got hotter.
Sources close to the Trump team say the president and his advisers are actively considering releasing the full audio of Biden’s now-infamous interview with special counsel Robert Hur — the same interview that painted Biden as mentally diminished and sparked nationwide concerns over his cognitive decline.
Although no final decision has been made, two Republican insiders briefed by Trump officials confirmed to Politico that plans to drop the tape are “on the table.” The Biden camp, meanwhile, is scrambling behind the scenes — fully aware that the release could deliver a crushing blow to the president’s already battered image.
At the center of this firestorm is special counsel Robert Hur’s 345-page report, which cleared Biden of criminal charges related to his mishandling of classified documents — but not without eviscerating his memory. Hur described Biden as a “well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory,” and cited multiple moments in the interview where Biden couldn’t recall basic facts, including when he served as vice president or the year his son Beau died.
Republicans seized on Hur’s assessment as proof that Biden is no longer fit for office.
“This is about transparency — and national security,” said House Speaker Mike Johnson. “The American people deserve to hear exactly what Robert Hur heard: a president who couldn’t remember his own history, his own tenure, or even his family’s tragedies. It’s heartbreaking, and it’s dangerous.”
In July, Johnson slammed the White House’s refusal to release the tapes, calling it a “cover-up” meant to shield Biden from the public’s judgment — especially after the president’s disastrous performance in his first 2024 debate against Trump. “We all know why they don’t want to release it. We saw it on stage. This is not a commander-in-chief. This is a man in decline,” Johnson added.
The audio in question stems from a two-day, 10-hour interview Biden voluntarily sat for in late 2023 as part of the investigation into his improper storage of classified materials — including documents found in his garage and at his private office at the Penn Biden Center. While Biden defended his cooperation, critics say the real takeaway is what Hur described as Biden’s “significant limitations” and “hazy” recollections of key foreign policy moments, including the withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Despite avoiding charges, Biden’s public image took a severe hit. Even some Democrats admitted privately that Hur’s report “did damage” — a phrase repeated in closed-door meetings during early 2024 campaign strategy sessions.
Now, the fight over the tapes could come to a head. A federal judge presiding over a lawsuit brought by the House Judiciary Committee has ordered both sides to submit a joint motion by the end of May — a deadline that could force Trump’s hand.
If the Trump administration proceeds with releasing the audio, it may override Biden’s claim of executive privilege, potentially setting a powerful legal precedent. While Biden has invoked executive privilege to block the release, critics argue it’s a flimsy excuse to avoid embarrassment. Ironically, Trump himself has frequently used the same legal shield — but critics of the Biden White House say what’s good for the goose should be good for the gander.
“This isn’t about politics,” said Rep. Jim Jordan, chair of the Judiciary Committee. “This is about letting the American people hear the truth. If President Biden really thinks he did fine in that interview, then what’s he hiding?”
The White House has claimed that releasing the tapes could discourage future witnesses from cooperating in similar investigations, but Republicans aren’t buying it.
Former U.S. Attorney Brett Tolman told Fox News, “This is unprecedented. A sitting president is using executive privilege to hide his own mental decline from the voters. That’s not executive privilege — that’s political damage control.”
With the 2024 election looming, and Trump’s campaign showing renewed momentum, the potential release of this audio could become a defining moment in the race. For now, Biden’s camp is bracing — but they may not be able to outrun the sound of their own words.
