Deadly Ambush at Nightclub Leaves 4 Dead, 14 Injured in Chicago

A hail of gunfire turned a night of celebration into chaos and carnage in Chicago’s River North neighborhood late Wednesday, when a drive-by shooting outside a packed nightclub left four people dead and at least 14 others injured.

The massacre unfolded just before 11 p.m. outside Artis Lounge on West Chicago Avenue. The club had just hosted an album release party for rising rap star Mello Buckzz when bullets ripped through the crowd.

“This was an ambush,” one shaken eyewitness told us. “People were screaming, running. It was like a war zone out here.”

According to Chicago police, a dark-colored vehicle rolled up outside the club and someone inside opened fire into the crowd without warning. The vehicle then sped off into the night, leaving bodies on the pavement and stunned survivors scrambling for cover.

Victims ranged in age from their early 20s to mid-30s. Witnesses described hearing rapid gunfire and seeing at least a dozen people collapse on the sidewalk.

“It felt like it went on forever,” said one nearby resident who asked not to be named. “You just don’t expect this on a Wednesday night in downtown Chicago.”

Four people were confirmed dead by early Thursday morning. Among them:

  • A 24-year-old man shot in the chest
  • A 25-year-old man shot in the head
  • Two adult women struck in the torso

NBC Chicago reports that the victims included Mello Buckzz’s boyfriend and best friend.

Three more victims remain in critical condition, including:

  • A 21-year-old woman shot in the mouth
  • A 24-year-old woman shot in the back
  • A 24-year-old woman shot in the leg

Others were listed in serious, fair, or good condition, with injuries to thighs, hands, knees, and feet.

Hospitals throughout the city were flooded with victims. Outside Northwestern Memorial and Stroger hospitals, anguished friends and family gathered through the night.

“I just want to know if my cousin is okay,” one woman sobbed. “She was just there to celebrate, not die.”

This isn’t the first time violence has struck this stretch of West Chicago Avenue. The Artis Lounge occupies the same space as Hush Chicago, a club the city shut down in 2022 after another shooting incident. At the time, police labeled it a “public safety threat.”

That warning now feels like a chilling premonition.

“This location has a violent history, and we’re looking into any prior complaints or red flags,” a CPD spokesperson said at a press briefing early Thursday.

No suspects are in custody as of Thursday morning. Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses. Police said it’s too early to determine a motive, but gang retaliation and personal vendettas are being considered.

“We are outraged,” said Alderman Brendan Reilly, who represents the River North area. “Our city cannot tolerate this level of violence.”

Mayor Johnson has yet to release a statement, but pressure is mounting as Chicago continues to grapple with headline-making gun violence.

Mello Buckzz, who was reportedly inside the club at the time of the shooting, took to social media in the early hours of Thursday:

“I can’t believe this. I lost my day ones tonight. I just wanted to celebrate my music. Now I’m planning funerals,” she wrote in an emotional Instagram story.

Her team has not responded to requests for comment.

By sunrise, the blood-soaked red carpet from the event lay rolled up on the sidewalk. A torn poster promoting the party fluttered against a police barricade. Shoes, jewelry, and a phone—still ringing—were left behind in the aftermath.

“This isn’t just a story about gun violence,” said one first responder. “It’s about the people who won’t be going home tonight. The families that will never be the same.”
