A horrific scene unfolded in Germany on Monday after a car tore into a crowd in the heart of Leipzig, leaving at least two people dead and several others badly hurt in yet another shocking act of violence on a European city street.
Authorities said the deadly incident happened Monday afternoon in central Leipzig, where a vehicle reportedly left the road and sped through a pedestrian zone packed with people. Police confirmed that two people were killed and said at least two others suffered severe injuries, though the full extent of the damage was not immediately clear.
Witnesses described a terrifying aftermath. Reports said a damaged Volkswagen SUV was seen at the scene, with one person apparently on top of the vehicle. Other eyewitnesses reportedly saw bodies covered with sheets in the area as emergency crews rushed in. There were also early local reports mentioning a possible stabbing, though officials had not confirmed those details.
So far, police have only said that multiple people were injured in what they described as a vehicular incident. Investigators have not yet released fuller details about what led up to the crash, whether it was intentional, or whether anyone was taken into custody.
The violence is the latest in a string of deadly vehicle attacks that have rattled Germany. Just last March, two people were killed in a vehicular ramming in Mannheim. That incident came only weeks after another similar attack targeted a union march in Munich, fueling fresh fears over public safety in major German cities.
As investigators work to piece together exactly what happened in Leipzig, the attack is certain to raise even more questions about security, law and order, and whether European leaders are doing enough to protect ordinary people in public spaces.
