9-Year-Old Dies After Water Park Incident as Authorities Launch Investigation

A family vacation turned tragic Thursday afternoon when a 9-year-old child died following a water rescue at Hersheypark’s Boardwalk, the park’s popular water attraction zone.

Emergency crews were called to the scene after lifeguards spotted the child in distress in one of the water features. Despite a rapid response that included on-site CPR and immediate transfer to Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, the child was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The child’s identity has not been released, and the exact circumstances of the drowning remain under investigation.

“Tonight, a nine-year-old guest was tragically lost at The Boardwalk at Hersheypark,” said John Lawn, CEO of Hershey Entertainment & Resorts, in a public statement late Thursday. “From the moment our lifeguard team recognized that a child was in distress, they performed an immediate rescue, followed by continuous, coordinated life-saving efforts.”

The incident reportedly occurred sometime in the afternoon during normal operating hours, but officials have not confirmed which of the 16 attractions within The Boardwalk was involved. The area includes features like The Shore, a massive 378,000-gallon wave pool, and the Whitecap Racer, one of the longest mat racing slides in the world.

Guests at the park were shaken. One visitor, Maria Delgado of Lancaster, PA, told reporters:

“You don’t expect something like this to happen. One minute everyone was laughing, and the next, there were sirens and lifeguards sprinting.”

While the exact cause of death remains unclear, Lawn emphasized that Hersheypark is fully cooperating with law enforcement and will conduct a comprehensive internal investigation.

“Our hearts break for this child and the child’s family,” Lawn continued. “We extend our deepest condolences and will do everything in our power to support the family and understand how this happened.”

Park officials stressed that guest safety remains their “highest priority.”

“We will honor the memory of this young guest by continuing our unwavering commitment to safety,” Lawn added. “Every ride, every pool, every day—we never take it for granted.”

This heartbreaking incident comes amid increased scrutiny of safety protocols at amusement parks nationwide. Just this month, Ohio’s Cedar Point faced backlash after its new “Tilt” roller coaster malfunctioned for the third time, leaving riders suspended mid-air.

Water parks, in particular, pose unique challenges for safety personnel. According to the CDC, drowning remains the second-leading cause of unintentional death for children aged 5–14 in the United States.

As the investigation unfolds, many are now asking whether theme parks are doing enough to ensure young guests are protected, especially in high-risk environments like wave pools and fast-moving slides.

For now, one family is mourning an unthinkable loss — and a summer day at Hersheypark will forever be remembered for a tragedy that no one saw coming.
