A quiet Labor Day walk turned eerie when a man and his dog stumbled upon what could be wreckage from the deadly midair plane collision that killed 67 people earlier this year in Washington, D.C.
Andrew Guevara told FOX 5 DC he was walking his dog along the Mount Vernon Trail in Alexandria over the weekend when he noticed something strange floating in the Potomac River.
“At first, I thought it was just trash,” Guevara said. “But there was something noticeable about it… the shape, the details. It didn’t look like ordinary debris.”
He described finding what appeared to be a lever resembling one used for an airplane tray table, along with what looked like a small leather pouch and the curved top of what strongly resembled an airplane seat.
Alexandria police were initially called to the scene, but the National Transportation Safety Board quickly took over. Officials confirmed they are now evaluating the object and will store it until it can be transferred with the rest of the wreckage from the January 29 accident.
The crash, which involved a commercial passenger plane and an Army helicopter over Washington, D.C., killed 67 people and sparked a nationwide investigation.
Back in July, the FAA revealed that an air traffic controller failed to warn the plane’s crew that an Army helicopter was moving into its path moments before the fatal collision.
Investigators are now working to determine whether the object Guevara found belongs to the wreckage — a discovery that could shed new light on one of the year’s deadliest aviation disasters.
