Son Bludgeons Mother to Death with Gardening Tool in Fight Over Inheritance

Authorities in Missouri say a family inheritance dispute turned deadly when a 39-year-old man allegedly murdered his own mother with a gardening tool.

Derrick Alling of Ozark was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action after deputies found the battered body of his 65-year-old mother, Carolyn Alling, inside a guesthouse on the family property.

Christian County Sheriff Brad Cole described the killing as one of the most disturbing cases his office has seen. “Deputies had a gut feeling something wasn’t right, and unfortunately, their instincts were correct,” Cole said.

On the evening of September 25, Carolyn’s husband—Derrick’s stepfather—called deputies to request a welfare check. Carolyn had stopped answering her phone. When officers arrived at the Alling residence around 9:30 p.m., they encountered Derrick, who gave evasive answers about his mother’s whereabouts.

When asked directly if his mother was alive, Derrick allegedly responded, “I don’t think so.” That chilling remark prompted deputies to detain him immediately. Minutes later, they found Carolyn’s body. Investigators say she had been bludgeoned with a gardening or scraping tool.

Court records paint a picture of escalating threats and fear inside the Alling household. According to prosecutors, Derrick had repeatedly demanded his inheritance and lashed out at his mother in the weeks leading up to the killing.

“The victim had been recording the defendant acting aggressively and violently towards her,” prosecutors wrote.

Carolyn’s husband told investigators that he and Carolyn even kept their marriage secret at times, worried Derrick might turn violent if he found out.

Carolyn Alling worked as a licensed dental hygienist for decades. She once lived in California with her late husband and their two children before moving back to Missouri later in life. Friends and colleagues remembered her as kind, hardworking, and deeply devoted to her family.

“She didn’t deserve this,” one neighbor told local reporters. “She was a gentle soul who loved her family, even when things were hard.”

Derrick Alling is being held without bond at the Christian County Justice Center. He has pleaded not guilty. His next court appearance is scheduled for October 14.

If convicted, he faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.

“This was about greed,” one law enforcement source close to the case said. “A son wanted money. A mother lost her life.”
