Bernie Sanders Stuns Left, Says Trump Handled Border Better Than Biden

Senator Bernie Sanders stunned many on a recent episode of The Tim Dillon Show by praising President Donald Trump’s approach to immigration, saying Trump “did a better job” securing the border than President Biden. Sanders also urged Democrats to shift back toward enforcement-focused policies.

“So long as we have nation-states, you’ve got to have borders,” Sanders said. “If you don’t have any borders, then you don’t have a nation.”

He didn’t hold back on Trump either. “Trump did a better job. I don’t like Trump, you know, but we should have a secure border, and it ain’t that hard to do.”

The comments, aired Wednesday and now circulating widely on X and YouTube, represent one of Sanders’ clearest breaks from his party in recent years. He blamed multiple administrations for failing to enforce immigration laws, saying, “Biden didn’t do it.”

Sanders, known for his populist economic platform, has occasionally diverged from Democratic orthodoxy on border issues, warning during his 2020 presidential campaign about the dangers of “open borders” rhetoric. “We have the technology and manpower to secure the border, but leaders of both parties have failed to do so,” he added.

The remarks came as Sanders promoted his new book, “Fight Oligarchy,” and responded to pointed questions about what the Democratic Party should stand for.

It’s a stark departure from his earlier stance. In 2020, Sanders dismissed talk of a border crisis and criticized Trump for “demonizing immigrants.” He even called border shutdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic “xenophobic” and downplayed what Trump described as a national emergency in 2019.

Now, Sanders’ comments echo long-standing conservative arguments, suggesting the Vermont independent is advocating for a border-first approach Democrats have largely avoided.
