Musician Says Obama, Newsom and Jay-Z Pushed Her into Trump’s MAGA Camp

Nicki Minaj is pulling back the curtain on her dramatic political transformation — and the rap superstar says some of the biggest names in Democrat politics and the entertainment industry pushed her straight into Donald Trump’s corner.

The 43-year-old rapper shocked fans after openly embracing MAGA politics and revealing she’s become one of President Donald Trump’s biggest celebrity supporters. But according to Minaj, her switch didn’t happen overnight. Instead, she says years of frustration with elite Democrats, Hollywood power players and what she calls a culture of intimidation inside the music business slowly pushed her away from the left.

And now? She says she’s done staying quiet.

Speaking in a bombshell interview with Time magazine, Minaj blamed former President Barack Obama, California Gov. Gavin Newsom and rap mogul Jay-Z for helping fuel her political awakening.

According to the rapper, there was always an “unspoken rule” during Obama’s presidency that Black entertainers were expected to publicly support Democrats — whether they agreed with them or not.

But Minaj suggested cracks began forming after watching Obama’s close relationship with Jay-Z, whom she has feuded with for years amid allegations that his entertainment empire used its influence to blacklist artists who challenged the industry machine.

“Jay-Z ended up costing Obama a lot, whether he knows it or not,” Minaj claimed. “Lots of rappers don’t like Jay-Z and were afraid to say it.”

The rapper also took issue with comments Obama made during the 2024 election cycle while campaigning for former Vice President Kamala Harris. Obama had suggested some Black male voters appeared hesitant to support a woman for president — comments Minaj said rubbed many people the wrong way.

“I just saw so many videos of Black men saying that they didn’t like the way they felt about that speech,” Minaj explained. “They felt like they weren’t being listened to.”

For Minaj, the backlash against independent thinking inside the entertainment world became impossible to ignore.

“It’s been ingrained in everyone’s brain in the music business that we are supposed to be a Democratic family,” she said. “I just knew they would not like me supporting Trump.”

Now, she says speaking openly about her beliefs has been liberating.

“I’ve never felt better,” Minaj declared. “When you can be yourself, you’re happier.”

But the final breaking point reportedly came after the rapper became the target of multiple swatting attacks — dangerous hoaxes where fake emergency calls send armed police rushing to a celebrity’s home.

Minaj revealed she reached out to Newsom’s office for help after repeated incidents in 2022, 2023 and again in 2025. According to the rapper, she never received a response.

“He just completely ignored me, with all the money I spent in taxes,” she blasted.

While she says California Democrats turned their backs on her, Minaj claimed Republican Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna stepped in and treated her with compassion and urgency after the most recent swatting scare.

“I’d never seen anyone in politics treat me that way,” Minaj recalled. “That’s what made me say that I don’t care to keep this a secret anymore.”

Minaj’s rocky relationship with Democrats stretches back even further to the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, when the rapper triggered national outrage after questioning vaccine safety on social media and making controversial claims about side effects.

At the time, conservative activist Charlie Kirk publicly defended her, accusing Democrats of attacking Black celebrities who refused to follow the party line.

“Democrats’ treatment of Nicki Minaj should be all the proof you need that they don’t care about Black people, especially those they can’t control,” Kirk wrote at the time.

Now, Minaj appears fully committed to her political rebrand — a move already sending shockwaves through both the entertainment industry and social media as fans react to one of hip-hop’s biggest stars openly embracing MAGA politics.
