College Student Dies After Being Struck by Cop Car Near Campus

A University of San Diego student died in a horrifying early-morning tragedy near campus after police say he stepped into the path of a patrol vehicle in an apparent suicide.

The heartbreaking incident unfolded around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 17, near Linda Vista Road, just outside the university’s campus. A San Diego police officer was driving a marked patrol car when the vehicle suddenly felt an impact, according to authorities.

When the officer turned around, he found a young man lying in the roadway.

The student, described by officials as a man in his early 20s, was rushed to a nearby hospital as emergency crews fought to save him. He was pronounced dead at about 3:35 a.m.

At first, police said the circumstances surrounding the collision were unclear, leaving investigators to piece together what happened in the dark hours before dawn. But after reviewing evidence and speaking with witnesses, authorities said they believe the student intentionally stepped into the path of the police vehicle.

“Based on the evidence collected and witness statements obtained during the investigation, the death is believed to be a suicide,” police said in a statement.

The student’s name has not been publicly released, with the university saying it is withholding his identity out of respect for his grieving family.

The University of San Diego confirmed the devastating loss in a statement, saying the school is cooperating with the San Diego Police Department as the investigation continues.

“Early this morning, a University of San Diego student passed away after being struck by a vehicle near campus,” the university said. “The San Diego Police Department is currently investigating the incident, and the university is fully cooperating with its investigation. At this time, out of respect for the family’s privacy, the student’s name is not being shared publicly.”

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the campus community, where students, faculty and staff are now mourning a young life lost under deeply painful circumstances.

“USD’s thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies are with the student’s family, friends and classmates during this unimaginably difficult time,” the university added.

Counseling and support services are being made available to students and staff as the university community struggles to process the death.

Police have not released additional details about the moments leading up to the incident.
