President Donald Trump fired back at a reporter Sunday after she pressed him on what critics have called “mounting threats of war” against U.S. cities.
“When you say that, darling, that’s fake news,” Trump shot back, speaking outside the White House before boarding Marine One. “Be quiet and listen. You don’t listen, you never listen. That’s why you’re second rate.”
The exchange, aired on Fox News, came just a day after Trump’s fiery Truth Social post declaring that “Chicago [is] about to find out why it’s called the Department of WAR” — a rebrand he’s given the Pentagon since returning to office.
Pressed on whether his comments signaled federal military action against Democrat-run cities, Trump insisted the opposite.
“We’re not going to war — we’re gonna clean up our cities,” the president said firmly. “We’re gonna clean them up so they don’t kill five people every weekend. That’s not war, that’s common sense.”
The White House later confirmed that the administration is finalizing an aggressive new anti-crime initiative aimed at what Trump calls “America’s most dangerous blue zones.”
“People are dying every single weekend in places like Chicago, Baltimore, and Philadelphia,” a senior Trump adviser told Breitbart News. “President Trump was elected to restore law and order — and he’s going to deliver.”
Trump’s Saturday Truth Social post featured an AI-generated image of himself styled as a soldier from Francis Ford Coppola’s iconic 1979 Vietnam War film, Apocalypse Now. In the image, helicopters swarm a burning skyline as Trump stands in military fatigues, captioned: “The Department of WAR.”
Democrats pounced on the post, accusing the president of “inciting violence” against cities run by their party. But Trump allies say critics are twisting his words.
“Anyone suggesting President Trump wants to wage ‘war’ on Americans is lying,” Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) told Newsmax. “What he’s talking about is sending in federal resources to finally stop the crime wave Democrats have allowed to spiral out of control.”
Trump’s remarks come amid skyrocketing homicide rates in several Democrat-led cities. In Chicago alone, there were more than 720 homicides last year — and 2025 has already seen a 15% rise, according to the city’s own data.
During his 2024 campaign, Trump promised to deploy federal forces if necessary to “end the chaos.” He frequently blasted local officials for what he called “soft-on-crime policies” that have “turned American cities into war zones.”
“This isn’t about politics,” Trump said Sunday. “This is about saving lives. I don’t care if you’re Republican, Democrat, Independent — people shouldn’t be afraid to walk to the grocery store.”
While details of Trump’s federal crackdown are still emerging, senior White House officials say the initiative will combine Justice Department task forces, expanded U.S. Marshals operations, and increased National Guard support “where governors cooperate.”
“We’ve had four years of Democrats letting criminals run wild,” the adviser added. “This administration is done watching. Action is coming.”
